Military Lasers Under Development to Combat Drone Swarms

Attacks by cheap, yet efficient, mini-drones will be the future of warfare and lasers look like the best response to the threat, a retired colonel told RT as Germany announced a successful military laser test.

“Imagine an attack on an important facility with several hundred AI-controlled unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), equipped with warheads the size of a hand grenade and capable of flying into an open window or a cockpit of an aircraft,” Mikhail Khodarenok, military analyst and retired colonel in Russian missile defense forces, told RT.

Mini-drones cost relatively little, but can do significant damage by “striking a modern airplane, priced at more than $100 million, at an airfield or destroying a very expensive long-range anti-aircraft missile system,” he said.

“How do you stop those UAVs? Fire anti-aircraft guided missiles, worth $200 thousand each, at them?” Khodarenok wondered.

“Effective means of combating micro- and mini-UAVs are currently nonexistent and lasers look like a very promising area of research in this regard. Firing a laser costs pennies, but the effect can be huge.”

Bush Lawyer Calls For Trump “To Be Removed Under 25th Amendment”

The attempted coup against President Trump continues to unfold with more obstructers calling for Trump to be removed from office by his own cabinet.

The latest to do so is former George W. Bush ethics czar Richard Painter, who declared Monday that Trump should be forced to resign because he is “not well”, a long ago worn out tactic that deep staters are now returning to after the Russia witch hunt monumentally failed to turn up anything untoward.

“I think we need to understand, though, why we’re in this situation,” Painter said, speaking about Trump’s national emergency declaration.

“The president is not well at all mentally. I think he’s an extreme narcissist.” Painter added.

“He has been denied what he wants, his wall, and he is having a hissy fit. He is out of control, and he will not take ‘no’ for an answer from Congress.” Painter continued.

“He is going to tear the country apart. It’s unconstitutional. It’s illegal. He is going to do enormous damage to the Republican Party which is going to split right down the middle over this, and we really need to keep in mind that this is because the president is not well,” he added.

The former Bush lawyer said that Trump “is a man who believes Vladimir Putin rather than his own intelligence sources.”

“[Trump] is not capable of doing the job. He does need to be removed under the 25th amendment, but he stocked his cabinet with people who are unwilling to do that, and Congress is apparently unwilling to even try to remove him through impeachment.” Painter also stated.

Painter has repeatedly attacked Trump, even suggesting in 2017, on MSNBC programming, that Trump is engaged in ‘destroying democracy’ via a coup.

“The commander in chief is Donald Trump,” Painter said, adding “There is a risk of him using that power to destroy our democracy, whether you call it a coup or anything else. It’s not from the critics of Donald Trump that the danger is posed, it’s the fact that the man who is commander in chief of our military is engaged in obstruction of justice.”

In addition to Painter, Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren also called Sunday for the 25th to be invoked, and for Trump to be removed.

The desperate calls for the 25th Amendment to be evoked, and the moves by deep staters to implement such a plot have been a mainstay since Trump was elected over two years ago.

The media has relentless attempted to portray the President as mentally unstable to this end:

The bipartisan spending binge is now worse than under Bush and Obama

We’re now $22 trillion in debt, yet despite all that red ink, the Mexican cartels have control of our border and we’re not one bit closer to spending money on our own security. We’ve gone into deep debt for everything except the core function of the federal government.

It feels like it was yesterday when I was watching the news as a kid with my parents in 1995, listening to Newt Gingrich, during the infamous shutdown fight, warn about the dire consequences of crossing the $5 trillion debt milestone. It feels like it was yesterday when I was writing press releases for candidates in “the year of the Tea Party” on how Obama and the Pelosi Congress took the debt to $14 trillion in such a short period of time. Now, over eight years into varying degrees of GOP control of Congress and the White House, we have crossed the $22 trillion mark, expanding the debt more rapidly than at any time in our history. Whereas the debt exploded by $5 trillion during Bush’s eight-year tenure, a shocking figure at the time, it has now increased $8 trillion just since Republicans controlled the House in 2011 and by $4 trillion over the past four years, since they controlled at least two of the three political organs of government.

Now, the only question Republicans have is how many pennies of border security they will fight for, while refusing to challenge any of the nonessential and even harmful programs of the federal government. The GOP platform on debt and spending is a lie from top to bottom, as Republicans plan to pass more budget bills allowing us to blow through the budget caps without any effort to systemically reform the way we budget.

Now that Republicans are planning to cave on border funding, can they at least force a confrontation with Democrats over spending levels for functions of government that are nowhere near as important as border security? Thus, departments like HUD, which were able to completely shut down for a month with nobody noticing, will continue to enjoy record spending. We will continue to provide security for Kabul and Baghdad with the beefed-up military budget since last year’s budget deal, but no funding for our border or meaningful use of the military to protect our own sovereigntyfrom the daily incursions by the most brutal cartels on earth.

Why even have a Republican Party any more?

Even more indefensible, unlike during the end of Bush’s years and the beginning of Obama’s tenure, when we first began accruing trillion-dollar annual deficits, we are not facing a deep recession. In fact, we are enjoying the most robust period of job growth since the late 1990s, and revenue is at a record high baseline.

Let it be known for all of time that dire predictions of revenue slumping as a result of the tax cuts were fake news. The entirety of the current deficit problem is due to increased spending. According to the latest monthly report released by the Treasury Department yesterday, spending was up 9.6 percent for the first three months of fiscal year 2019 relative to the first three months of FY 2018. What about revenues? They actually rose slightly by 0.2 percent, despite some declines in certain revenue categories. This is an important statistic, because it is the first clean metric we have comparing a period of time with the tax cuts in full implementation to a period before the tax cuts.

Moreover, some of the increased tax revenue from more payroll taxes likely would not have occurred without the job creation spawned by the tax cuts. If you isolate the revenue tallies for individual and corporate taxes, the government obviously did lose some revenue in certain categories, but it was made up by a $15 billion increase in payroll tax revenue (FICA, Social Security taxes), in addition to increased revenue from excise taxes.

The annual deficit after just three months stood at $319 trillion, well on pace to smash the trillion-dollar deficit mark for the first time in a booming economy.

Thus, this bipartisan era of debt is worse than anything we’ve seen this generation, and it is all happening with record revenue and a booming economy – with no world war consuming our economy and budget.

Thanks to Republican-approved budget deals, for the first three months of the fiscal year, outlays for HHS are up 12.5 percent, outlays for the Department of Education spiked 23 percent, and outlays for the Department of Commerce have doubled! Meanwhile, outlays on Homeland Security have actually been down by 30 percent because of less disaster spending under FEMA than last year. But it’s not like we went on a spending binge for Border Patrol and ICE. Outlays on military spending are up 8.45 percent, but again, what is the purpose of the military if we use it everywhere else in the world except against those who most directly harm us at our own border?

British Embassy In Syria Quietly Under Construction As UK Concedes Assad To Stay

Syria’s President Assad is fast “coming in from the cold” a recent AFP headline concluded.

This not unlike the history of Libya’s Gaddafi, suddenly going from international pariah status to being courted by the Bush administration starting in 2004, culminating in Condoleezza Rice sharing a late night dinner with the late Libyan dictator during an official visit in September 2008 (though later returning to “pariah” in 2011, leading to a bloody field execution). But for Assad, who’s long long promised to “liberate every inch” of natural Syria now a greater possibility given US plans to pull all troops out of the country likely within months things could be moving faster than anyone expected.

An exclusive report by Middle East news site, Al Masdar, suggests the UK could be the next to reestablish official diplomatic relations with Assad, as the British Embassy in Damascus appears to be undergoing construction after being shuttered for most of the conflict following the suspension of all services in 2012. Could Britain be readying to reopen its embassy in Syria following similar preparations by a spate of Arab nations, most notably the UAE?

Al Masdar News was able to confirm the following by visiting the British embassy location in Damascus:

The British Embassy in Damascus is undergoing construction, despite the fact that it was closed at the start of the Syrian conflict.

According to an Al-Masdar field correspondent who visited the site, the British Embassy in Damascus was indeed under construction, marking the first time since its closure that any work has been done to the building.

Syrian government officials, who would be kept apprised of any impending plans or construction works, declined to comment:

Al-Masdar reached out to the Syrian government about the mysterious construction; however, the official in Damascus declined to comment on the project.

The project reportedly began earlier this week and the construction focused on the front entrance of the building.

Iranian media is also currently circulating reports of renovations underway on the UK’s embassy to Syria, via Fars News:

The Arabic-language Rai al-Youm quoted informed sources as saying that the renovation process of the UK embassy in Damascus has begun on Thursday.

The sources pointed to the presence of an interior renovation team in Damascus, and said that the embassy is preparing for reopening in the near future.

In a relevant development in late December, as Arab states had rushed to resume ties with Damascus, former Britain’s Ambassador to Syria Peter Ford said “Washington is not powerful enough to block restoration of Arab states’ diplomatic relations” with Syria.

Crucially, news of construction on the embassy building comes the same day UK’s Foreign Ministry has announced it’s officially given up on hoped-for regime change in Syria. From the start of the war UK intelligence has been at the forefront, alongside the CIA, of regime change efforts including funding, arming, and training opposition forces in Syria.

Britain’s Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt speaks during a press conference at Ministry of Foreign Affair in Putrajaya, Malaysia, Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019. via the AP

According to The Telegraph, citing official statements:

Jeremy Hunt, Foreign Minister, has conceded that President Bashar al-Assad will remain in place for “a while”, reversing Britain’s long-held position to reflect the new reality on the ground in Syria.

“The British long-standing position is that we won’t have lasting peace in Syria with that (Assad-led) regime,” Mr Hunt said. “But regretfully we do think he’s going to be around for a while and that is because of the support that he’s had from Russia.”

The foreign minister further said in a television interview with Sky News, “Russia may think that it’s gained a sphere of influence. What we would say to them is: Yes – and you’ve also gained a responsibility.”

Hunt called on Russia to ensure no chemical weapons are used, something the West has long accused Assad of: “If you’re going to be involved in Syria then you need to make sure that there really is peace in Syria,” Hunt said. “And that means making sure that President Assad does not use chemical weapons on his own people.”

Thus it appears Assad’s “normalization” with both Arab and increasingly even Western countries who were a short time ago enemies is moving fast.

The UAE Embassy in Damascus reopened last Thursday, Dec. 27. via Syrian Digital Media

First, a week ago the embassy of the United Arab Emirates was formally re-opened in a ceremony in Damascus – the first time a Gulf country re-established official relations with the Assad government since all GCC states first shuttered their embassies there in 2012. And more significant, following this Gulf nations are now reportedly leading efforts to readmit Syria into the Arab League after the organization expelled Damascus eight years ago when the conflict first began.

Should the British embassy in Damascus indeed announce that it will open in the coming months, this will mark the beginning of Assad’s acceptance once again by the West, and would further likely green light a Syrian and Russian attack on Idlib which is the last large al-Qaeda bastion in the country.

Gun Buyers to Submit Social Media Passwords, Search History Under Bill

Prospective New York gun buyers could be required to undergo a review of their internet search history and social media activity by providing necessary passwords under newly-drafted legislation, according to reports.

The bill, written by Brooklyn borough President Eric Adams and state Senator Kevin Parker, would empower officials and judges to review up to three years of internet activity of those applying for, or renewing, pistol permits in New York.

“Posts from the past three years on sites like Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat would be reviewed for language containing slurs, racial/gender bias, threats and terrorism,” reports Rochester First. “One year of search history on Google/Yahoo/Bing would also be reviewed.”

Some are raising concerns about the bill, and the subjective nature with which it could be enforced.

“The judge who grants or denies a permit has fairly broad digression under New York State law. And it has to have a rational basis. So they can’t say they don’t like your gender or your race,” attorney Sheldon Boyce told WIVB. “For example, religious practice — are we going to deny permits because a person goes to church or goes to a mosque?”

“In the case of Heller vs District of Columbia in 2008, the US Supreme Court held that the possession of a handgun in the home is a fundamental constitutional right so anything that infringes upon that right is subject to challenge.”

WIVB reports that the only social media accounts expressly listed in the bill are Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram.

Donations To Border Patrol Foundation Surge Under Trump

An uptick in donations since President Trump took office has allowed the Border Patrol Foundation charity to deliver $1 million in financial aid grants for agents and their families since its creation in 2009.

“In the last year and a half, I think as Border Patrol gets a lot more attention in the news, people are starting to look at ways that they can help the agents when they need it,” said BPF Executive Director Shannon Staples, a former agent.

In response to the surge in donations, the foundation has been able to give more to the nearly 20,000 Border Patrol agents in the country, including in cases of on- and off-duty deaths, injuries, illnesses, family medical emergencies, special circumstances, and scholarships.

“Any time that we can assist, we try to as much as we can,” she said.

Caged Migrant Children Photo Goes Viral As Left Rages At Trump; Except It Happened Under Obama

A photograph of two migrant children sleeping in a cage at an ICE detention facility quickly went viral on Sunday after several prominent liberals tweeted it in a white-hot rage at President Trump’s immigration policy.

After a laundry list of journalists and public figures angrily tweeted the photo – including CNN’s Hadas Gold, NYT Mag’s editor-in-chief Jake Silverstein, Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau and former LA mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, they deleted their tweets in shame when it emerged that the photo was taken in 2014, under Obama.

French government under fire after May Day chaos

France’s interior minister promised Wednesday to boost security at protests after hooded youths ran amok at a May Day rally in Paris, torching cars and a McDonald’s restaurant.

Police said 109 people were in custody after the violence, which has sparked criticism that the government was unprepared for the 1,200 black-clad troublemakers who joined the traditional May 1 march for workers’ rights.

“The authority of the state, reduced to statements of ‘strong condemnation’, has been tarnished once again,” read a column in the right-leaning Figaro newspaper.

French island hospital groans under African baby influx

The main hospital in Mayotte, wedged between Madagascar and the southeast African mainland, is now home to the busiest maternity ward in France — mostly serving migrant mothers.

So great is the influx of mothers from the neighbouring Comoros islands — which are much poorer and not part of France — that the government is now considering the drastic step of declaring the hospital as non-French territory.

Hadidja, one of the few Comoran mothers willing to speak to journalists, admitted with some embarrassment that she is here because she wants her children “to be French”.
