Turkey Sentences 24 Journalists to Prison, Claiming Terrorism Ties

A Turkish court sentenced 24 journalists to prison on Friday, ruling that they were linked to a religious sect that the government calls a terrorist group and that has been blamed for a failed coup attempt in 2016.

Most of the journalists worked for news organizations that are considered friendly to Fetullah Gulen, a cleric living in seclusion in a small town in Pennsylvania. The Turkish government claims that Mr. Gulen leads a shadowy, violent movement aiming to overthrow President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Mr. Erdogan has become increasingly authoritarian since the coup attempt. He has steadily tightened his control over the government, the military, the media, courts, schools and even the internet, fraying relations with Turkey’s Western allies. He has purged tens of thousands of people suspected of disloyalty from the government and the military, and thousands more have been arrested and charged with supporting terrorism.

In the July 2016, elements of the military appeared to seize power, and aircraft bombed the Parliament building and presidential palace in Ankara, the capital. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands were wounded before Mr. Erdogan reasserted control.

Vladimir Putin uses birds to take down drones sent by spies or ISIS

It is understood the raptor birds are better able to target small drones than hawks.

The source told Russian news agency RIA Novosti: “There is already such an experience of use in Europe, but you need to understand that the female hawk weighs about 1.2-1.4 kilograms, the weight is not very big.

“Therefore it will be difficult for her to intercept even small drones.”

Blind ISIS Fighter Rallies Jihadists in New Video from Terror Group

Nearly a month after a one-legged ISIS fighter told jihadists that a disability was “no excuse” for not fighting, the Islamic State featured a visually impaired jihadist in a new video calling for attacks.

The video filmed in Deir Ezzor, Syria, in the Euphrates river valley al-Khayr province near the Iraq border, focuses on Kazakh jihadists just days after President Trump and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev met at the White House.

It also comes as Kazakhstan has spent January as president of the UN Security Council, per the rotation among members.

The video features a handful of Kazakh jihadists decrying Nazarbayev’s government as illegitimate and encouraging attacks in Kazakhstan.

ISIS Group Behind World Cup Threats Vows ‘Greater’ Manhattan Attacks

The pro-ISIS media group behind a recent string of threats against the 2018 World Cup lauded the Manhattan truck attack and warned of more bloodshed to come in posters distributed to online supporters today.

The propaganda wave comes as official ISIS channels, including the affiliated Amaq news agency, have not yet taken credit for the attack — even as terror suspect Sayfullo Saipov reportedly asked for an ISIS flag to be hung above his hospital bed.

One of the posters from the Wafa’ Media Foundation, labeled “Manhattan” with a backdrop of burning, crumbling skyscrapers and a semi-truck — significantly more truck than the flatbed pickup Saipov rented from Home Depot — shows a masked, armed jihadist standing before the scene. Whereas this jihadist wields a rifle, Saipov brandished a paintball gun and a pellet gun — and had a stun gun in his truck — before he was shot in the abdomen by a real bullet from an NYPD officer.

Dolphin Mall bomb suspect made ISIS-inspired videos, FBI says

Miami man was trashing the U.S. government and its anti-terrorist actions around the world while a confidential informant listened to his every word.

Vicente A. Solano told the informant that he wanted to carry out a terrorist attack at a crowded Miami-Dade mall on Black Friday, the big Christmas shopping day after Thanksgiving, according to federal authorities. The informant said he could introduce Solano to someone who could assist him but he needed proof that his intentions were for real.

Solano texted the informant three videos that featured a man wearing a black mask and shirt, standing in front of a black flag identical to one used by the Islamic State terrorist group, according to a federal criminal complaint.

And thus began an FBI undercover operation targeting Solano, who was arrested by agents at the Dolphin Mall on Friday night on a charge of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction in the food court at the sprawling shopping center in Sweetwater. Solano, 53, made his first appearance in Miami federal court on Monday afternoon, describing himself as a painter who makes $13 an hour and has no savings. Solano, a Honduran citizen, has a minor criminal history.
