Republicans Urge Trump to Ban Surveillance Tech Sales to China

President Trump’s administration should ban the export to China of technology that can be used for surveillance, a pair of Republican lawmakers urged Wednesday.

“U.S. companies should not be assisting in the expansion of China’s systems for surveillance, detection, and detention, or be complicit in what are gross violations of internationally recognized human rights occurring daily in the XUAR,” Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and New Jersey Rep. Chris Smith, the Republican co-chairs of a congressional panel dedicated to China, wrote to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.

Chinese repression in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region has drawn international condemnation and the attention of Rubio and Smith’s Congressional-Executive Commission on China. The crackdown on internal dissidents plays into the Communist Party’s efforts to implement a critical infrastructure agenda through Central Asia, which also aids Chinese efforts to expand influence abroad.

Facebook accused of conducting mass surveillance through its apps

Facebook used its apps to gather information about users and their friends, including some who had not signed up to the social network, reading their text messages, tracking their locations and accessing photos on their phones, a court case in California alleges.

The claims of what would amount to mass surveillance are part of a lawsuit brought against the company by the former startup Six4Three, listed in legal documents filed at the superior court in San Mateo as part of a court case that has been ongoing for more than two years.

A Facebook spokesperson said that Six4Three’s “claims have no merit, and we will continue to defend ourselves vigorously”. Facebook did not directly respond to questions about surveillance.

Documents filed in the court last week draw upon extensive confidential emails and messages between Facebook senior executives, which are currently sealed.

Amazon Pushes Facial Recognition to Police, Prompting Outcry Over Surveillance

In late 2016, Amazon introduced a new online service that could help identify faces and other objects in images, offering it to anyone at a low cost through its giant cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services.

Not long after, it began pitching the technology to law enforcement agencies, saying the program could aid criminal investigations by recognizing suspects in photos and videos. It used a couple of early customers, like the Orlando Police Department in Florida and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon, to encourage other officials to sign up.

But now that aggressive push is putting the giant tech company at the center of an increasingly heated debate around the role of facial recognition in law enforcement. Fans of the technology see a powerful new tool for catching criminals, but detractors see an instrument of mass surveillance.

On Tuesday, the American Civil Liberties Union led a group of more than two dozen civil rights organizations that asked Amazon to stop selling its image recognition system, called Rekognition, to law enforcement. The group says that the police could use it to track protesters or others whom authorities deem suspicious, rather than limiting it to people committing crimes.

Rand Paul asks Haspel if she knows of any CIA surveillance of Trump

Rand Paul has one last question for CIA director nominee Gina Haspel: Was she at all involved with any surveillance of President Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign?

The Kentucky senator sent Haspel a letteron Tuesday laying out his suspicions. The missive amounts to a last-minute effort to derail Haspel before her expected confirmation by attempting to get the president’s own CIA nominee to admit to being aware of the intelligence community monitoring the president.

Story Continued Below

“She’s high enough up in the CIA. I think we should know what she knows about whether the Trump campaign was surveilled upon,” Paul said on Fox News. “Before she’s appointed, if she is indeed appointed, I would like to know what does she know about the surveillance of the Trump campaign and why was the CIA involved?”

Trump in 2017 accused former President Barack Obama of having his “wires tapped” in Trump Tower in New York. The Justice Department later said there was no evidence of any such wiretaps. One Trump campaign adviser, Carter Page, was the subject of FBI surveillance, and other Trump advisers had conversations with people who were being monitored.

Artificial Intelligence Could Soon Enhance Real-Time Police Surveillance

Several technology companies are working with police departments across the U.S. to develop the capability to add artificial intelligence to video surveillance and body cameras that could identify faces in real time, potentially expanding the reach of police surveillance.

The body-camera technology, expected to be ready by the fall, hasn’t yet been purchased by police departments and is still in the development stage. Police departments, including the New York Police Department, already use facial recognition to review surveillance footage after a crime has occurred.

The new software uses an algorithm to tell an officer on the spot, through a body camera or a video surveillance camera, that it has found a suspect. The officer could then make a decision of whether to stop the suspect or take some other action.

Nvidia Making Facial Recognition AI for Smart City Surveillance

According to Anyvision, the technology can continuously scan for faces 24/7, and automatically identify and track individuals with 99% accuracy. Then the systems algorithms, with the help of human monitors, will compare identified faces with criminal databases. The technology is also meant to be scalable across platforms, from smartphones to computers

This initiative is part of Nvidia’s Metropolis program. The company has already partnered with Cisco, Genetec, Omni AI, and MotionLoft with the goal of bringing AI-powered surveillance technology to cities to help make them ‘smarter’

Chinese Police Add Facial-Recognition Glasses to Surveillance Arsenal

As hundreds of millions of Chinese begin traveling for the Lunar New Year holiday, police are showing off a new addition to their crowd-surveillance toolbox: mobile facial-recognition units mounted on eyeglasses.

China is already a global leader in deploying cutting-edge surveillance technologies based on artificial intelligence. The mobile devices could expand the reach of that surveillance, allowing authorities to peer into places that fixed cameras aren’t scanning, and to respond more quickly.

The devices, released late last year, were touted in state media this week as a means to help authorities during times such as the annual Lunar New Year migration that begins next week, when Chinese travelers flood train stations and airports

New York State Police to start using drones – WKBW.com Buffalo, NY

The program is launching sometime this month with four drones, one of which will be used by the State Police right here in Western New York. The other three will go to State Police in Central New York, the Hudson River area, and the Capital region.
By April 2018, an additional 14 aerial drones will be deployed throughout the state.
“This state-of-the-art technology will improve emergency response, improve operational and cost efficiencies and increase Trooper safety,” Governor Cuomo said. “We will continue to implement innovative technologies to improve our ability to protect New Yorkers across this great state.”
Governor Cuomo says the drones will be more cost-effective than manned aircrafts like helicopters and can be used in dangerous situations and environments without putting State Troopers in harm’s way.
