Hundreds of Prisoners Swapped Before Yemen Peace Talks

Both sides in Yemen’s civil war will meet in Stockholm for peace talks this week and have agreed to a large swap of prisoners.

Yemen foreign minister Khaled al-Yamani, part of the pro-government force backed by Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates, said Tuesday they’ve “come to an agreement” with the Houthis after being deadlocked in negotiations for months.

“When we head to the negotiations in Sweden, we will discuss the operational issues of this agreement, how it can be implemented, how to exchange the detainees, prisoners, abductees and the forcibly disappeared,” al-Yamani said.

Yemen Rebel Leader to Join Peace Talks If Safe Return Guaranteed

A top Yemen rebel leader said Thursday the Huthis will attend UN-brokered peace talks next week in Sweden if guarantees to ensure they can leave home and return back are maintained.

“I think that the national (Huthi) delegation will be in Sweden God willing on December 3 if guarantees remain to ensure they can depart and return,” said Mohammed Ali al-Huthi on Twitter.

Huthi, who heads the rebels’ Higher Revolutionary Committee, said there should also be “positive indications on the importance of peace from the other side.”

Mattis Confirms Yemen Peace Talks

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Wednesday that peace talks between Yemen’s warring parties are likely to take place in early December in Sweden.

Western countries are pressing for a ceasefire and renewed peace efforts to end the more than three-year-long conflict, which is seen as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

A Saudi-led military coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015, backing government forces fighting the Iran-allied Houthi group. The Houthis now rule most of Yemen’s population, while the exiled government controls a section of the south.

Yemen Peace Talks Imminent

A senior leader of Yemen’s Shiite rebels said on Monday that the group will halt rocket fire into Saudi Arabia for the sake of peace efforts, answering a key Saudi demand in the first public sign of hope for the latest push to stop the bloodshed and civilian suffering in the Arab world’s poorest country.

For the past three years, a U.S.-backed, Saudi-led coalition has been waging war against the rebels, known as Houthis, to restore Yemen’s internationally recognized government to power. The rebels say they had been excluded from that government and took power to rectify historic grievances against central authority.

The rebel leader, Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, said in a statement to journalists that the Iran-backed rebels ordered the cessation of rocket and drone attacks on the Saudis and forces loyal to coalition member the United Arab Emirates at the request of U.N. special envoy Martin Griffiths.

PEACE! North and South Korea agree to ‘COMPLETE denuclearisation’ as Moon Jae-in vows ‘there will be no war’ with Kim Jong-un

The declaration included promises to pursue military arms reduction, cease “hostile acts,” turn their fortified border into a “peace zone,” and seek multilateral talks with other countries, such as the United States.

In his first ever press conference in front of the world’s media Kim Jong-un said:“We are one nation we cannot be separated. We share the same blood.

“We are living with each other. We are brothers.”

The Koreas said they hope the parties will be able to declare an official end to the war by the end of this year.

What’s happened so far:

  • Kim Jong-un met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on the southern side of the demilitarised zone in the border truce village of Panmunjom
  • He made history as the first North Korean leader to cross into the South since the Korean War ended in 1953
  • The leaders displayed signs of unity and peace as they shook hands on both sides of the border line
  • Kim signed a guest book at the Peace House, in which he wrote: “A new history begins now”
  • Referring to missile tests, Kim joked “[we] won’t interrupt your early morning sleep anymore”
  • Kim offered to visit South Korean presidential mansion after Moon suggested more summits
  • The pair have planted a commemorative pine tree from 1953 – the year the Korean War armistice was signed – at the border truce village.
  • The countries have agreed to the the complete denuclearisation of the peninsula and hope to declare the war officially over by the end of this year.

Israeli-Palestinian Peace Deal Is Alive Thanks to Jared Kushner

It was easy to miss it, what with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson being fired and President Donald Trump fueling rumors of more personnel shake-ups. But last week Jared Kushner, presidential adviser and son-in-law, presided over a highly unusual White House conference on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Who participated was noteworthy: Israel was there, alongside Arab states with which it does not have diplomatic relations, such as Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Who didn’t participate was noteworthy too: the Palestinians, who have been boycotting Trump since his announcement that the U.S. will have an embassy in Jerusalem.

The meaning of the conference can only be deciphered in relation to the Kushner-led peace effort. That long-shot effort is alive, notwithstanding Kushner’s defeat by chief of staff John Kelly in the White House palace intrigue over security clearance.

Trump team briefs Security Council on Mideast peace plan

US President Donald Trump’s Middle East peace team briefed members of the UN Security Council on their plan to jumpstart negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians on Tuesday.

Two sources familiar with the briefing told The Jerusalem Post that Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law leading the diplomatic effort, Jason Greenblatt, his special representative for international negotiations, and Nikki Haley, US envoy to the UN, fielded questions from diplomats for roughly an hour after a public session of the council concluded.

The briefing by senior Trump administration officials followed a speech to the council by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who asked UN members to come up with an international mechanism that would replace any US-led peace effort.
