YouTube Cracks Down on Flat-Earth Videos and Other Conspiracies

YouTube is cracking down on “borderline content and content that could misinform,” the company said in a blog post on Friday morning.

The Google-owned video site said it’s tweaking its recommendation algorithm to “reduce” the number of conspiracy videos suggested to users. That includes “videos promoting a phony miracle cure for a serious illness, claiming the earth is flat, or making blatantly false claims about historical events like 9/11,” according to YouTube’s post.

The company said that this applies to content that “comes close to–but doesn’t quite cross the line of — violating” its user guidelines, and its wide-ranging rule book that includes bans on nudity and videos that promote violence. Cutting back on conspiracy video recommendations impacts less than 1 percent of videos on YouTube, according to the company. But considering YouTube serves more than 1 billion hours of content each day, there’s still a mountain of videos peddling bogus claims.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Endorsements Boost Other Left-Wing Democratic Candidates

In the week since her upset primary win, New York Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has turned to elevating and endorsing like-minded contenders around the country.

Cortez’s blessings have proved enormously fruitful so far, especially for insurgent left Democrats facing similarly uphill odds in their primaries against more traditional incumbents.

One example where the boost has been apparent is in the campaign of Kerri Harris, currently challenging Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE) from the left on a platform that includes single-payer health care and a progressive tax code.

Austin bombings: Suspect Mark Conditt dead, sought other addresses

He said he’d been inside the bomber’s house and drew up a map of the interior for the FBI before their SWAT team moved into the area.

He saw one man come out of the house.

A group of barbers from Delton’s Pecan Street Barber Shop in downtown Pflugerville watched From their shady patio on Pecan Street as police stood guard on the perimeter of the neighborhood where Mark Conditt lived directly across the street.

Authorities in Pflugerville closed down the entire neighborhood while local, state and federal law enforcement officers investigated Conditt’s house.

Terrance Harper has worked as a barber at the shop for around seven years.

“It makes you be more aware, just knowing it could have been that close. That’s close to home,” he said. “Our lives could have been threatened. You never know (at what scale) he was producing the bombs.”

Harper said there was a suspicious package behind the shop on Saturday. It unnerved him enough to take a picture of it on his phone.

He said he didn’t know if police were ever called to investigate it.
