Trump Administration to Cancel $929 Million in California High-speed Rail Funding

The U.S. Transportation Department announced Tuesday it would attempt to cancel $929 million in federal grant funds for California’s troubled high-speed rail project.

The move marks an escalation in the war between President Trump and California in the days since Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a rethinking of the bullet train project after years of cost overruns.

The Transportation Department also announced it was “actively exploring every legal option to seek the return from California of $2.5 billion in federal funds.” It’s unclear whether it has the legal authority to do so, and California would likely oppose such a move.

MEP Warns UN Pact Will Flood Europe With 59 Million Migrants by 2025

British MEP Janice Atkinson warns that the UN Compact on Migration would lead to Europe being flooded with 59 million new migrants within the next 6 years.

The document is not legally binding, but governments will be under pressure to follow its dictates. Numerous countries, including the United States and Hungary, have said they will refuse to sign the pact.

“If you think you’re in control of your borders, think again,” said Atkinson, adding, “This compact backs the EU and the UN’s aim to flood our nations with 59 million migrants by 2025…. just 6 years.”

Atkinson went on to explain the source of the new pact; A 2000 declaration that concluded Europe’s ethnic population was in decline “and therefore needed replacing.”

This has been disproven by youth unemployment in some European countries being 50% or higher, as well as many new migrants being “unemployable,” with only around 13% employed on average according to Atkinson.

The MEP savaged British Prime Minister Theresa May for promising to take back control of British borders via Brexit and yet planning to sign the UN migration pact next month.

“Remember – the UN and the globalists want to flood our continent with 59 million migrants by 2025,” Atkinson emphasized, adding that the UN document states mass immigration is “inevitable, desirable and necessary.”

Warning that the plan would lead to European countries having their “culture and identity crushed,” Atkinson also pointed out that the pact could lead to hate speech laws that make it illegal to use the term “illegal migrants,” replacing it instead with “irregular migrants”.

“It will be illegal not to use their prescribed language,” warned Atkinson, adding that European citizens could “say goodbye to your democracy and your way of life,” unless they demand their leaders refuse to sign the document.

The MEP’s concern about language policing is shared by Dutch MEP Marcel de Graaff, who said that the pact would grease the skids for laws that would criminalize criticism of mass immigration as hate speech.

36 million have voted early, setting the stage for big midterm turnout

A staggering 36 million voters cast their ballots ahead of Election Day this year, setting the stage for much-higher-than-usual turnout for a midterm — and, potentially, big surprises on Tuesday night.

Republican enthusiasm for President Donald Trump and Democrats’ itch to repudiate him at the ballot box have driven people to the polls far faster than in 2014, when 27.2 million people voted early, according to Michael McDonald, a University of Florida professor who tracksvoter turnout.

And that trend is expected to extend into Election Day. Early voters in three states — Texas, Nevada and Arizona — have already surpassed total turnout in the last midterm election, McDonald’s data shows, and more states will blow past their normal non-presidential turnout with just a handful more votes on Election Day. The high voting rates have transformed expectations about who will show up in the midterms — and they could inspire results that diverge from any pre-election polls that did not reckon with this year’s unusually high enthusiasm.

“This is not a normal election,” McDonald told POLITICO. “The best guess is that we’re looking at some sort of hybrid midterm/presidential election” in terms of turnout.

More than a million undocumented immigrants have received California driver’s licenses

More than 1 million undocumented immigrants have received driver’s licenses, the California Department of Motor Vehicles announced Wednesday.

Assembly Bill 60, authored by then-Assemblyman Luis Alejo in 2013, required California DMV offices to issue driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants as long as they can prove their identity and residence within the state. The law has led to 1,001,000 undocumented immigrants receiving licenses as of March 31 but doesn’t give the licensees carte blanche to drive outside of California or fly across state or federal borders.

“Immigrants are getting tested, licensed and insured and this is making our roads safer for everyone,” said Alejo, now a Monterey County supervisor, in a prepared statement. “Today, we see the law working the way it was intended to and has dramatically improved the lives of a million immigrants and their families.”

Twelve states plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico allow undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses. Undocumented immigrants were free to receive driver’s licenses anywhere in the U.S. until 1993, when California became the first state to restrict access and 45 others followed suit.

Aspen marijuana shops sold $11.3 million in 2017, topping liquor stores for first time

There was plenty of green to go around among Aspen’s marijuana dispensaries in 2017, and more than enough to top liquor stores in revenue, as well.

Legal-pot purveyors hauled in $11.3 million in revenue last year compared with $10.5 million for liquor stores, marking the first time marijuana sales outpaced booze for the year in Aspen. The figures were provided Wednesday by the city’s Finance Department in its year-end sales tax report for 2017, which showed Aspen’s retailers combined to generate $730.4 million in revenue, 2 percent better than 2016 (see chart on page A6).

Cannabis revenue last year also marked a 16 percent improvement over 2016, which produced $9.7 million in sales. Of Aspen’s 12 retail sectors, the marijuana industry also enjoyed the biggest rate of growth last year. Liquor store sales were flat between 2016 and 2017, according to the city’s’ report.

Japanese cryptocurrency exchange loses more than $500 million to hackers

Hackers stole several hundred million dollars’ worth of a lesser-known cryptocurrency from a major Japanese exchange Friday.

Coincheck said that around 523 million of the exchange’s NEM coins were sent to another account around 3 a.m. local time (1 p.m. ET Thursday), according to a Google translate of a Japanese transcript of the Friday press conference from Logmi. The exchange has about 6 percent of yen-bitcoin trading, ranking fourth by market share on CryptoCompare.

The stolen NEM coins were worth about 58 billion yen at the time of detection, or roughly $534.8 million, according to the exchange. Coincheck subsequently restricted withdrawals of all currencies, including yen, and trading of cryptocurrencies other than bitcoin.

Recon Buys Majority Stake in Millennium Films for US$100 Million

Shenzhen-based and listed Recon Holding has taken a 51 percent stake in Millennium Films, producer of The Expendables series, for US$100 million, the two companies announced Thursday in a statement.

The announcement ends rumors that a deal for that amount was being negotiated, although initial speculation indicated that price was more likely for a complete buy-out of Los Angeles-based Millennium.
