Migrant Caravan Set To Storm US Border Due To Mexico Eviction

The Mexican government has asked the migrant caravan to move to a new location, further from the U.S. border and away from Tijuana’s tourist area, but a majority of the group refused to leave and instead look to make a run for America over the weekend.

Trump Closes Major Trade Deal With Canada, Mexico

The United States, Canada and Mexico signed a North American trade pact on Friday, and President Donald Trump brushed aside difficulties he may have in getting the deal through U.S. Congress, where the opposition Democrats will control one of its two chambers from January.

The leaders of the three countries agreed on a deal in principle to govern more than a trillion dollars of mutual trade after a year and a half of acrimonious negotiations concluded with a late-night bargain just an hour before a deadline on Sept. 30.

Friday’s signing potentially ends a big source of irritation for the U.S. administration as it pivots to a much bigger trade fight with China that threatens the global economy. All eyes are on a meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday after a G20 summit in Buenos Aires.

UPDATE: Deal with Mexico would make asylum seekers wait outside U.S. border

administration has won the support of Mexico’s incoming government for a plan to remake U.S. border policy by requiring asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their claims move through U.S. courts, according to Mexican officials and senior members of President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s transition team.

President Donald Trump briefly described the arrangement in a pair of tweets Saturday evening. “Migrants at the Southern Border will not be allowed into the United States until their claims are individually approved in court,” Trump wrote. “No ‘Releasing’ into the U.S….All will stay in Mexico.”

The president then issued a threat. “If for any reason it becomes necessary, we will CLOSE our Southern Border. There is no way that the United States will, after decades of abuse, put up with this costly and dangerous situation anymore!” Trump wrote.

Earlier in the day, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said in a statement that “President Trump has developed a strong relationship with the incoming Lopez Obrador Administration, and we look forward to working with them on a wide range of issues.”

The agreement would break with long-standing asylum rules and place a formidable barrier in the path of Central American migrants attempting to reach the United States and escape poverty and violence. By reaching the accord, the Trump administration has also overcome Mexico’s historic reticence to deepen cooperation with the United States on an issue widely seen here as America’s problem.

According to outlines of the plan, known as Remain in Mexico, asylum applicants at the border will have to stay in Mexico while their cases are processed, potentially ending the system, which Trump decries as “catch and release,” that has generally allowed those seeking refuge to wait on safer U.S. soil.

“For now, we have agreed to this policy of Remain in Mexico,” said Olga Sánchez Cordero, Mexico’s incoming interior minister, the top domestic policy official for López Obrador, who takes office Dec. 1. In an interview with The Washington Post, she called it a “short-term solution.”

“The medium- and long-term solution is that people don’t migrate,” Sánchez Cordero said. “Mexico has open arms and everything, but imagine one caravan after another after another. That would also be a problem for us.”

US judge temporarily blocks Trump’s order refusing asylum to illegal migrants from Mexico

A judge has temporarily blocked US President Donald Trump’s order to ban Central American asylum seekers from illegally crossing the border into the country from Mexico.

US District Judge Jon Tigar in San Francisco placed a restraining order on Trump’s new immigration policy, which was declared last week.

The president “may not rewrite the immigration laws to impose a condition that Congress has expressly forbidden,” the judge wrote, adding that the rule barring asylum seekers from entering the US outside a port of entry “irreconcilably conflicts” with the existing legislation.

On November 9, the president announced that asylum seekers can now make their claim only at legal points of entry along the US border.

The ruling comes as a massive caravan of Central Americans, which was traveling from Honduras and El Salvador to the US through Mexico, has reached the nation’s border at Tijuana.

President Trump, repeatedly referring to the caravan as an “invasion,” argued that it contains “hardened criminals.”He pledged not to allow the migrants to enter the US illegally and threatened to deploy up to 15,000 troops to help the existing border staff.

Even before the caravan crossed into Mexico through Guatemala, its growth and movement had become a hot-button issue in US politics. Republicans and the right-leaning media warned that the large influx of migrants would lead to various risks and destabilize the situation in the southern states.

The left, meanwhile, accused them of fearmongering. An anti-illegal migrant ad, paid for by the Republican Party and shared by Trump on Twitter ahead of the midterms, was banned from Facebook, CNN and Fox News for being “racist.”

The arrival of the migrant caravan also caused tension in Mexico and sparked anti-migrant rallies in Tijuana, with protesters shouting “No to the invasion.”

Judge Releases New Mexico Jihadists on Bond After Attorneys Complain of Racism

Five alleged Muslim extremists who are accused of training children to carry out school shootings have been released on bond after one of their attorneys complained that the men were only being targeted because they’re “black and Muslim,” as opposed to “white and Christian.”

Judge Sarah Backus said that prosecutors didn’t prove the alleged jihadists were “a danger to the community” and released them on a $20,000 “signature bond,” which means they won’t even have to pay the fee unless they violate the conditions of their release.

“The state argued that the 11 children at the compound were being trained to use guns as they prepared to attack teachers, law enforcement and others in institutions that the group considered corrupt,” reports the Albuquerque Journal.

Eleven malnourished children were found on the property while another child had died at his father’s hand “during a religious ritual intended to expel religious demons from his body.”

However, one attorney argued that the men were victims of Islamophobia and racism, commenting, “The NRA right now are telling us that guns are a good thing and that we should be training our teenagers to go ahead and use them, but now that we have someone who’s actually do that, and they’re not white, and they’re not Christian we think there’s some nefarious plan.”

“No one would bat an eye” if the men were white Christians, added Thomas Clark, attorney for Siraj Wahhaj.

Judge Backus appeared to show sympathy towards the alleged jihadists when she remarked, “Many people here live in unconventional ways.”

NBC correspondent Gadi Schwartz tweeted a video showing the tunnel underneath the compound.

Entire police force detained in Mexico town where mayoral candidate killed

The whole police force in a Mexican town of Ocampo where a mayoral candidate was slain this week has been detained for an internal investigation, authorities said Sunday.

“All of them are being interviewed to proceed as due under law in the event anyone has taken part in acts that violate the town’s codes,” said the security secretariat in Michoacan state, where the town of about 20,000 people is located.

It did not give the exact number of police detained.

Caravan through Mexico largest in 10-year trek history

The president’s focus on the issue came on the heels of a report on the website Buzzfeed, which has been following the progress of the Pueblo Sin Fronteras group. Their pilgrimage then caught the attention of Fox News commentators, as well as the president’s.

It remains uncertain how many of the caravan’s participants will ultimately reach the border, as some are expected to remain in Mexico. Close to 80 percent of the caravan’s members are from Honduras, where citizens have been suffering through gang violence and a deadly military crackdown on political protests following last year’s presidential election.

Earthquake shakes southern Mexico for second time in three days

The quake hit 32 km (20 miles) east of Santa Catarina Mechoacan in the state of Oaxaca at a depth of 40 km at 12.57am (6.57am GMT), the US Geological Survey said, revising its strength down slightly from an initial 6.1 magnitude.

The tremor was strong enough to trigger earthquake alarms in Mexico City, more than 200 miles (320 km) away, but was shorter and less intense than one of Friday in the same area that damaged about 1,000 houses.

Magnitude-7.2 earthquake slams south, central Mexico

A powerful magnitude-7.2 earthquake shook south and central Mexico Friday, causing people to flee swaying buildings and office towers in the country’s capital, where residents were still jittery after a deadly quake five months ago.

Crowds of people gathered on Mexico City’s central Reforma Avenue as well as on streets in Oaxaca state’s capital, nearer the quake’s epicenter.

“It was awful,” said Mercedes Rojas Huerta, 57, who was sitting on a bench outside her home in Mexico City’s trendy Condesa district, too frightened to go back inside. “It started to shake; the cars were going here and there. What do I do?”

Two DACA recipients arrested on suspicion of human smuggling

Border agents were sent to the area after a resident spotted what appeared to be a smuggling incident, federal officials said. Further investigation led agents to a vehicle suspected of being involved, which they pulled over on Interstate 5 near Dairy Mart Road about 12:10 p.m.

Three men were inside: the driver, a 20-year-old DACA recipient whose status had expired, and two Mexican nationals, ages 21 and 22, suspected of being in the country illegally.
