Putin threatens to target the US if it deploys new missiles in European nations

President Vladimir Putin warned of a resolute response if the U.S. decides to station missiles in neighboring countries to Russia.

Putin, at his annual address to parliament on Wednesday, said his country would not seek confrontation and would not take the first step in deploying missiles after the suspension of the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

However, he said Russia would respond to any deployment of new intermediate-range missiles in Europe by targeting the United States itself and not just the countries were they were held, according to a Reuters translation. He said he would field new weapons that would target U.S. decision-making centers.

He warned U.S. policymakers, some of whom he said were obsessed with U.S. exceptionalism, about being careful before taking new measures.

“It’s their right to think how they want. But can they count? I’m sure they can. Let them count the speed and the range of the weapons systems we are developing,” Putin said to applause, according to Reuters.

Israeli Summit of European Powers Collapses Amid Holocaust Dispute

An Israeli summit hosting Eastern European governments fell apart Monday after Israel’s top diplomat said Poles “suckled anti-Semitism with their mother’s milk,” the latest clash between two governments largely aligned except on where to apportion blame for the wartime murder of Jews.

Poland pulled out of the meeting, planned to take place in Jerusalem, after a series of comments by Jewish leaders regarding Poland’s participation in the Holocaust.

In solidarity with Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic will hold bilateral meetings with Israeli leaders instead of attending the summit.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has aimed to cultivate ties with these right-leaning nations in a bid to drive a wedge between them and the rest of the European Union, which his government considers to be harshly critical of Israel in international forums. The dispute comes ahead of Israeli elections in April: Mr. Netanyahu is drawing on his ties to world leaders to pitch himself as being in another league and the best face for Israel on the world stage.

The Israeli leader himself provoked Polish ire in recent days. In Warsaw last week, Mr. Netanyahu told reporters that Poles cooperated with the Nazis during the Holocaust, in response to a question about a recently enacted Polish libel law against accusing Polish society of complicity in the Holocaust.

His remarks were misquoted in one Israeli outlet as referring to the Polish nation cooperating with the Nazis, rather than some Poles, which sparked outcry from the Polish government.

Poland responded by withdrawing their prime ministerial delegation to the summit and planned to send their foreign minister instead. But Israel’s acting foreign minister Yisrael Katz escalated tensions on Sunday by quoting a former Israeli prime minister on Poland and the Holocaust. “[Yitzhak] Shamir said the Poles suckled anti-Semitism with their mothers’ milk. Nobody will tell us how to express ourselves and how to remember the fallen.”

Mr. Katz, who said he is the son of Holocaust survivors, told i24 News “we will never forgive and never forget, and there were many Poles who collaborated with the Nazis.”

Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, who also faces re-election this year, said the remarks pushed him to pull Poland out of the summit.

“They are unacceptable not only in diplomacy, but for me they are absolutely unacceptable in the public sphere,” Mr. Morawiecki said in a statement carried by government-owned broadcaster Telewizja Polska.

A spokesman for Israel’s foreign ministry said Monday that the prime ministers from Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia will still travel to Israel on Monday and hold meetings with Mr. Netanyahu the following day.

Many Israelis consider Polish complicity in the Holocaust a historical fact—and necessary to explain how German occupiers were able to murder 90% of the country’s Jews. However, many Poles feel that foreign accounts of Nazi rule overlook the murder of Christian Poles and that Jews are afforded an elevated status as victims compared with Poland’s non-Jewish war dead.

Both countries’ governments, led by nationalist, right-leaning parties, are otherwise like-minded on a number of issues and have grown close in recent years, each throwing vocal support behind U.S. President Trump. Following Washington and Israel’s lead, Poland has taken a tougher line on Iran than most European states. Last week, Warsaw, the Polish capital, hosted a two-day Middle East summit of Israeli, Arab, and Western governments, widely viewed as an attempt by the U.S. to use Poland as a neutral ground on which to shore up an anti-Iran alliance between Israel and other Arab states.

But ahead of elections this year, both Poland and Israel are attempting to rally bases whose feelings around the Holocaust run deep.Poland’s government contends only a few isolated Polish individuals cooperated with the Nazi campaign of Jewish extermination. It argues that the murder of Poles—about 3 million non-Jewish Poles died during the war—constitutes a Polocaust, a term used by its Ministry of Culture, which is seeking to build a museum educating foreigners about the suffering of Poles during the war.Historians are more conflicted on the issue: a string of pogroms broke out in Poland during and after the war as Soviet then Nazi forces traded control of towns, and Poles took out their frustrations by murdering Jewish civilians who in some places were seen as allied with Bolshevism. At the same time, the government of Poland was effectively dissolved when Nazi troops stormed across the border in 1939. That wasn’t the case in much of Europe where governments imposed by or allied with Germany helped dispatch Jews to death camps. Thousands of Poles are recognized by Yad Vashem, Israel’s official Holocaust memorial, for saving Jews during Nazi rule, an act punishable by death according to wartime law in Poland.Write to Drew Hinshaw at drew.hinshaw@wsj.com and Felicia Schwartz at Felicia.Schwartz@wsj.comFOLLOW THE LINK FOR THE FULL REPORT – JR

Soros “Seeking to Influence” European Elections – Hungarian Official

George Soros “is again seeking to influence the European Parliamentary elections”, the communications director of ruling Fidesz told Hungarian public media on Tuesday, adding that the US financier was backing “pro-migration forces.”

Balazs Hidveghi spoke in reaction to a meeting between Soros and Frans Timmermans, vice-president of the European Commission, and said that the talks reflected that “Brussels is irrevocably in Soros’ pocket.”

Hidveghi insisted that Timmermans is a “notorious pro-migration politician” who has “regular talks with Soros behind closed doors”, while his spokesperson “would not answer questions about the talks.”

Calling Mohammed a Pedophile Not Covered by Free Speech, European Court Rules

Europe’s top human rights court has ruled that comments about Mohammed having pedophilic tendencies are not covered by the right to freedom of expression, agreeing with the assessment of courts in Austria that the remarks constituted “an abusive attack on the Prophet of Islam which could stir up prejudice and threaten religious peace.”

A seven-judge European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) panel in Strasbourg concluded that the Austrian courts had “carefully balanced the applicant’s right to freedom of expression with the rights of others to have their religious feelings protected, and to have religious peace preserved in Austrian society.”

Thursday’s decision came nine years after Elizabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff, an Austrian political scientist and activist, held a seminar in Vienna where among things she criticized the treatment of women in Islam. The topic of Mohammed’s marriage to Aisha, the youngest of his dozen wives and concubines, came up.

According to Islamic texts, the 7th century Arabian who founded Islam was betrothed to Aisha when she was six, and the marriage was consummated when she was nine.

The court record quotes Sabaditsch-Wolff as having said that Mohammed “liked to do it with children,” (other translations of the German comment render it “had a thing for little girls”) and saying, “A 56-year-old and a six-year-old? … What do we call it, if it is not pedophilia?”

Urgent push to criminalize criticism of Islam

Turkey, a member of NATO along with the United States, for years was regarded as a moderate Muslim nation with Western leanings.

But it recently has taken a sharp turn toward full-blown Islamic law and persecution of non-Muslims.

It just got worse, with a statement from a high government official that Turkey wants all governments across Europe to criminalize “Islamophobia,” which would include any negative comment about the religion.

The report comes from Uzay Bulut, a journalist from Turkey who has worked with the Haym Salomon Center. She’s currently based in Washington and writes at the Gatestone Institute.

She wrote in a recent report for the Foundation for Political, Economic and Social Research that Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Çavuşoğlu called on EU governments to criminalize “Islamophobia.”

Her report quoted him saying, “There is no ideology or terminology called ‘Islamism’; There is only one Islam and it means ‘peace.’”

She pointed out that it is salaam that means peace, not Islam, which means submission.

She wrote, “Urging all politicians to recognize Islamophobia as ‘a hate crime and a form of racism’ in their constitutions, Çavuşoğlu accused European judiciaries of applying a double standard by not paying as much attention to Islamophobia as they do to anti-Semitism.”

Cottbus, about 120 kilometres southeast of Berlin, has been rocked by violence from refugees and right-wing extremists since the start of this year.

Earlier this week, Brandenburg state police reported that two male Syrian teenagers were arrested under the suspicion of injuring a German teenager in the face with a knife.

The 16-year-old sustained non life-threatening injuries in what started as an altercation between Syrian and German school acquaintances near a tram station

Macron tells Marr that France would LEAVE EU if French voters had a vote in referendum

Asked about the Brexit vote, the candid president told Marr: “I am not the one to judge or comment on the decision of your people.

“But, my interpretation is that a lot of the losers of globalisation suddenly decided it was no more for them.”

Marr then pushed the French president, regarded by many as the EU’s new leader, on whether Britain’s decision was a one-off.
