Diet Coke ‘increases your risk of dying young from heart disease and cancer’

Sugar-laden fizzy drinks also increase the risk of early death from any cause by a fifth – and are also fuelling a rise in cancer cases, Harvard experts said.

While swapping to Diet Coke – or diet versions in general – is better, drink more than four a day and you’re still at risk of dying young.

In fact, previous studies have shown that the six common artificial sweeteners – aspartame, sucralose, saccharin, neotame, advantame and acesulfame potassium-k – have all been found to be toxic to gut bacteria.

They’ve been associated with weight gain, slashing the chances of getting pregnant during IVF, tripling the risk of a deadly stroke and dementia, and raising the risk of developing diabetes.

Stick to water

Experts said the best option is to ditch fizzy drinks altogether and stick to water instead.

Dr Vasanti Malik, who led the study at Harvard Uni in the US, said: “Our results provide further support to limit intake of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and to replace them with other drinks, preferably water, to improve overall health and longevity.

“Drinking water in place of sugary drinks is a healthy choice that could contribute to longevity.

“Diet soda may be used to help frequent consumers of sugary drinks cut back their consumption, but water is the best and healthiest choice.”

Sugar-sweetened beverages include carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks, fruit drinks, energy drinks and sports drinks.

Two sugary cans a day increases risk by fifth

In the new study, published in Circulation, looked at data from 80,647 women and 37,716 men who had answered questionnaires about lifestyle factors every two years.

They found that the more sugar-sweetened drinks a person drank, the more his or her risk of early death from any cause increased.

Drinking two a day increased that risk by 14 per cent, while those guzzling more than two a day had a 21 per cent increased risk of early death.

They also had a 31 per cent higher chance of dying young from heart disease.

Each additional drink consumed per day increased the risk by another 10 per cent.

Researchers also found a link between sugary drink consumption and an early death risk from cancer.

Are AirPods dangerous? 250 scientists sign petition warning of cancer

  • In 2018, Apple sold 29 million pairs of AirPods
  • The tiny wireless Bluetooth headphones fit into the ear canal
  • 250 scientists from over 40 countries have signed a petition to the WHO and UN to warn against radiowave radiation from WiFi, Bluetooth and cell data
  • The close proximity of AirPods to the brain and inner ear may raise cancer risks

Apple’s popular wireless AirPods headphones may pose cancer risks to wearers, according to a United Nations and World Health Organization petition.

Some 250 have signed the petition, which warns against numerous devices that emit radiofrequency radiation, which is used in WiFi, cellular data and Bluetooth.

AirPods in particular are concerning because they sit deeply enough within the ear canal to emit expose these fragile parts of the ear to dangerous among of radiation, some experts warn.

The scientific jury is still out on the whether or not the particular devices an cause cancer, but animal studies on the kind of radiofrequency radiation that they emit has suggested a link to cancer.

Radiowaves from Bluetooth AirPods may be carcinogenic, a group of 250 international scientists warned in a petition against minimally regulated wireless technology

Radiowaves from Bluetooth AirPods may be carcinogenic, a group of 250 international scientists warned in a petition against minimally regulated wireless technology

And, in some cases, the levels of radiation found to be carcinogenic were significantly lower than the maximum allowed by federal and international guidelines.

Last year, Apple sold 28 million pairs of its tiny, white wireless earbuds. The year before, they sold 16 million pairs. With a new design reportedly on the way, the technology company is set to profit even more on sound.

But the devices could be pumping more than beats into wearers’ heads.

The AirPods wirelessly connect with a phone via Bluetooth, the popular short distance radio communication technology.

Essentially, anything that communicates wirelessly using electromagnetic energy waves of varying types.

Bluetooth operates on one form involving low-power radiowaves.

5G wireless network could cause cancer

Arthur Robert Firstenberg is an American author and activist on electromagnetic radiation and health.

He founded the independent campaign group the Celluar Phone Task Force and since 1996 he has argued in numerous publications that wireless technology is dangerous.

In his 1997 book Microwaving Our Planet: The Environmental Impact of the Wireless Revolution, he claimed: “The telecommunications industry has suppressed damaging evidence about its technology since at least 1927.”

He has recently started an online petition calling on world organisations, such as the UN, World Health Organisation (WHO), and EU to “urgently halt the development of 5G” – which is due to be rolled out this year.

Massive dose of measles virus kills cancer cells

A massive injection of the measles virus received by a 50-year-old woman in the United States shrank her tumours and eventually made them disappear.

The trial at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota was carried out on Stacy Erholtz, who was declared free of the disease.

She was one of two patients to participate in the trial which did not prove successful with the other volunteer.

The next step will be a similar trial involving a larger group of patients, which is expected to take place in September.

Ms Erholtz of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota has for years suffered from myeloma, a blood cancer that affects bone marrow.

Two stem cell transplants and chemotherapy had proved unsuccessful and her body was riddled with cancer with one tumour growing on her forehead.

Previous trials had shown that a virus can kill cancer in mice, but this was the first time the technique had been used on a human being.

The Mayo experiment was described as a “proof of concept” that a single massive overdose of a virus can overcome a cancer’s natural defences.

In this case it entailed injecting Ms Erholtz with 100 billion units of the measles virus – enough to provide inoculations for 10 million people.

However the virus had to be “engineered” before using the therapy.

Within five minutes she was suffering a splitting headache and then as her temperature soared to 105 degrees she started shaking and vomiting.

But 36 hours later the tumour on her forehead began to shrink, in the weeks that followed it disappeared along with others in her body.

Stephen Russell, professor of molecular medicine, who carried out the experiment, described the successful trial as a landmark.

“We have a virus that can do that selectively to a tumor without at the same time causing damage to normal tissues in the body,” he said.

“We’ve known for a long time that we can give a virus intravenously and destroy metastatic cancer in mice. Nobody’s shown that you can do that in people before.”

More Blood Pressure Drugs Recalled Over Cancer-Causing Chemical

Another batch of blood pressure drugs have been recalled over fears they contain traces of a cancer-causing chemical.

Valsartan was originally developed by Novartis, marketed as Diovan, but it is now off patent and US patients can instead use generic versions from various companies around the world.

However, last summer it emerged some produced in China had been contaminated with a carcinogen called NDEA, prompting a global recall.

Excess body weight and the world of cancer

According to new studies, excess body weight is an established cause of cancer, currently known to be linked to 13 cancers.

A new study looking at the share of cancers related to obesity finds the proportion of cancer cases that could be attributable to excess body weight reflects variations in obesity rates in the U.S.

The burden of obesity-related cancers

Cancers related to body weight is twice as predominant in women than in men.

While differences in excess body weight is well-known across countries and cities, there is little information on the burden of obesity-related cancers.

To learn more, American Cancer Societyinvestigators led by Farhad Islami, M.D., Ph.D., Scientific Director, Surveillance Research, calculated the population attributable fraction (PAF) of incident cancer cases attributable to excess body weight among adults in all 50 states of America and the District of Columbia.

They found that in both men and women, there was at least a 1.5-fold difference between states with the highest and lowest proportions of cancers attributable to excess body weight.

Among men, the population attributable fraction (PAF) ranged from 3.9% in Montana to 6.0% in Texas. Meanwhile, the PAF for women was approximately twice as high as for men, ranging from 7.1% in Hawaii to 11.4% in the District of Columbia. States with largest PAFs were mostly located in the South and Midwest, plus Alaska and the District of Columbia.

The proportion was far greater for some individual cancer types.

“The proportion of cancers attributable to [excess body weight] varies among states, but [excess body weight] accounts for at least 1 in 17 of all incident cancers in each state.” Explained the researchers.

“Broad implementation of known community and individual-level interventions is needed to reduce access to and marketing of unhealthy foods (e.g. through a tax on sugary drinks) and to promote and increase access to healthy foods and physical activity, as well as preventive care.”

FLASHBACK : 5G smartphones cause cancer; Big Wireless doesn’t want you to know

*I HAVE BEEN waiting and waiting for this particular form of popular fear to surface again. Electro-radiation fear has been subterranean for decades now.

*If smartphones cause cancer (and who knows, maybe they do, why not) then it’s even more likely that electric blankets, high-tension lines, microwave ovens and even household electrical wiring cause even more cancer. Plus, there must be thousands of other things that cause far more cancer than 5G smartphones, as otherwise we’d be seeing a colossal mortality wave of men and women with brain tumors and most likely ear tumors.

*Ever been to California? Where you walk into certain buildings with loud, alarming signs that declare, “Something In Here Causes Cancer In the State of California, Only, There’s Nothing You Can Do About That, Except To Worry”? This is an intervention that is very much like that.

Late yesterday, an independent peer review of the US National Toxicology Program’s cell phone study announced their findings of clear evidence that cell phone radiation causes cancer—validating The Nation’s new special investigation:

How Big Wireless Made Us Think That Cell Phones Are Safe: A Special Investigation
The disinformation campaign—and massive radiation increase—behind the 5G rollout.
The Nation 4-23-18

Mark Hertsgaard, the Nation’s investigative editor and the author of seven books, and award-winning investigative journalist Mark Dowie offer the first exposé of the wireless industry’s decades-long, global campaign to war-game science, manipulate media coverage, and massage government officials into convincing the public that cell phones are safer than independent science suggests.

Everyone knows Big Tobacco lied about cigarettes; Big Oil lied about climate change. This is the third leg of the stool: how Big Wireless used the same exact playbook to deceive the public and create the appearance of scientific uncertainty—making people think that cell phones are safer than independent science suggests. This, despite the fact that the wireless industry’s own scientists privately warned it decades ago there were “serious questions” about wireless radiation’s links to cancer and genetic damage.

(One key player has not been swayed by all the wireless-friendly research: the insurance industry. We found not a single insurance company that would sell a product-liability policy that covered cell-phone radiation. “Why would we want to do that?” one executive asked with a chuckle before pointing to more than two dozen lawsuits outstanding against wireless companies, demanding a total of $1.9 billion in damages.)

In the 1980s, cell phones were allowed onto the US consumer market without any government safety testing. This year, 5G is poised to roll out across the country, where antennas the size of a pizza box will have to be installed approximately every 250 feet to ensure connectivity. Wall Street is salivating at the potential trillions of dollars in economic activity—but by fast-tracking the technology and not doing premarket safety testing, will we make the same mistake with 5G as we did with cell phones?

According to the National Toxicology Program’s study, commissioned by the FDA in 1999, there is much more evidence of a cancer-cell phone connection than is widely assumed. More shockingly, NTP brass attempted to water down the public health implications of their findings—in line with the wireless industry’s long-standing denial that cell phone users face risks.

“How Big Wireless Made Us Think That Cell Phones Are Safe: A Special Investigation” is the April 23, 2018, cover story for The Nation, on stands the week of April 9. Hertsgaard is available for select interviews from San Francisco, CA. For bookings or further information, please see contact above.

Blood test to detect cancer within just 10 minutes developed by scientists

Ablood test can detect cancer within just 10 minutes, scientists have found, raising hopes that hard-to-spot diseases could be picked up early when treatment is most effective.

Currently doctors use symptoms and a raft of tests and biopsies to determine if cancer is present which can sometimes take months.

The new method from the University of Queensland looks for differences in the genetic code of cancerous and healthy cells.

The team found that the DNA of cancer cells sticks strongly to nanoparticles of gold giving a quick indication whether disease is present or not to the naked eye.

And because the same changes occur in all cancerous cells, the test should work on all cancer types, the team believes.

Writing in the journal Nature Communications Dr Matt Trau, Professor of Chemistry, said: “Our approach enabled non-invasive cancer detection, i.e a blood test, in 10 min from plasma derived DNA samples with excellent specificity.

“We believe that this simple approach would potentially be a better alternative to the current techniques for cancer detection.”

Cell Phones, Cell Towers & Cancer — Link Proven, But 5G Advances

A 2016 study on lab rats exposed to cell phone radiation proves a cancer link for males and extensive epidemiological studies done in the 80’s & 90’s in multiple countries showed at least a fourfold increase in cancer.

Here’s the data that caused the Federal government to block any prohibition of cell phone towers in the 1996 Telecommunications Act — the data they don’t want you to see as they rush to 5G.

Cancer Breakthrough: New Protein Could Lead to Novel Treatments

Researchers at York University have found a new role for a well-known protein in the body that may explain, in part, what goes wrong in certain cancers, as well as vascular and neurological disorders.

Beta-catenin, a wide-ranging and important protein for the regulation of cell function from the embryonic stage to adulthood, has already been implicated in the development of certain cancers, including colon, breast, leukemia and melanoma.

Lead researcher, biology Professor John McDermott of the Faculty of Science and his team, have found new intracellular interactions between beta-catenin and other proteins, which highlight a previously unknown role for this protein.

They show that beta-catenin not only has a role in gene expression, but it is also implicated in the control of messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) translation—the process by which genetic information is translated into protein in the machinery of the cell.

The findings surprised the researchers. “Beta-catenin is known to have an expansive role in cell biology, including a role in the nucleus in gene expression and at cell membranes, but this finding points to a new, and potentially important role for this ‘jack-of-all-trades’ protein,” said McDermott. “It’s a novel role for beta-catenin which was previously unknown despite there being thousands of published papers about this protein in the scientific literature.”

In collaboration with the Bayfield lab at York, they found evidence that beta-catenin is recruited by the fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) to the cellular machinery to help regulate the translation of mRNA into protein. mRNA carries the genetic information about amino acid sequences in proteins, which it copies from the DNA.

The research indicates that beta-catenin, when recruited to the translation machinery, represses translation. Upon appropriate signals, it then leaves this complex to allow cellular protein production to be increased. If proper regulation doesn’t happen at this step, it could contribute to problems associated with some cancers and neurological diseases.

This newly found role for beta-catenin is important as it provides a window into a process that was previously unknown and that can potentially lead to the development of novel therapeutic interventions.

“The next steps are to try to target these novel properties of beta-catenin in various disease states,” said McDermott.
